Salvage therapy with three protease inhibitors alongside nucleoside analogues or the NNRTI efavirenz is being explored by clinicians at the Royal Free Hospital in London.
They reported on four patients with high level cross-resistance to at least two classes of drugs who had responded well to combinations containing three protease inhibitors. All four patients had been previously diagnosed with at least one AIDS-defining illness, and had received at least three regimens.
In all cases regimens were reported to be well tolerated and were taken twice daily with food (poster 20).
