Topic: Treatment interruptions
Taking a break from your HIV treatment (a ‘drug holiday’) is not recommended. Studies have found that people taking treatment breaks are more likely to become ill and to die prematurely. Nonetheless, people taking part in researching aiming to find a cure for HIV may be asked to stop antiretroviral therapy in order to see if their HIV infection becomes detectable again, how soon, and at what viral load. This is known as an analytical treatment interruption and is only done with careful supervision for research purposes.
