Warnings over the risk of re-infection, or superinfection, with HIV were repeated today following the publication in the New England Journal of Medicine of a report of superinfection first presented at the Ninth Retroviruses Conference in Seattle earlier this year. Click here for full details of the case, reported on this website at the time.
Since then a further case has been identified, reported at the Fourteenth International AIDS Conference in July (click here for full details).
For a full review of the topic, including summaries of studies which have failed to identify any cases of superinfection in large cohorts, see Transmission of drug-resistant HIV in Anti-HIV therapy: Resistance on this website.
