New European HIV treatment guidelines

It’s very important that people with HIV receive expert care at a specialist HIV clinic.

Guidelines exist to ensure that patients are offered the most appropriate treatment and care.

New European guidelines have just been published. In the UK they sit alongside the British HIV Association (BHIVA) guidelines and attempt to summarise the key treatment standards across all European countries and in every aspect of treatment. 

They cover, amongst others, the following issues.

HIV and pregnancy

It’s possible for a women with HIV to have an HIV-negative baby.

HIV treatment, mode of delivery, and not breastfeeding can reduce the risk of mother-to-baby HIV transmission to very low levels.

HIV and hepatitis

Many people with HIV are also infected with hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or both. This is called co-infection. Liver disease caused by these viruses is an important cause of illness and death in people with HIV.
