Issues for HIV-positive couples
If both partners are HIV-positive there may be some health risk to the woman from unsafe sex, such as exposure to sexually transmitted diseases or to other strains of HIV. If either or both people are on combination therapy there is a theoretical risk of drug resistant strains being passed between the couple and also to the baby if it were to be HIV infected. This would limit the family's treatment options for the future. However, the prime (and proven) concern is likely to be the risk of passing on HIV to the foetus. It is important that health care providers raise conception plans with couples.
If both partners are HIV-positive it is particularly important that they consider the long term future of the child, in particular who will care for her/him if she and/or her partner is unable to.
