When they tested me for HIV, they also tested me for hepatitis C and I had both infections. I did okay on HIV treatment, but I had to leave work when I started hepatitis C treatment because of the bad side-effects. Unfortunately, the treatment didn’t work and I now have cirrhosis. I’ve experienced a lot of stigma, even from people who also have hepatitis C and from health care staff. My mother has been very supportive, but my father won’t speak to me. I sometimes wish I had cancer, at least it’s a socially acceptable disease.
